For a change

Just in two days time I will grow one year wiser. Ahhh .. it sucks to be old and I don't want to be older anymore. I guess I have to make a deal with God. I have big plans for my birthday. I am going to decorate my room, make a playlist of songs, download a nice movie to watch, buy some tobacco for the hookah, make mojito and order some Cuban food along with a delicious cake. And then I'm going to sit at home in my pajamas and enjoy my birthday all alone.

For a change, I would love to celebrate my birthday solo. Partly because I do not want people to sing the same old "Happy Birthday To You". As such I'm not a big fan of that song either. For the past three weeks, my life is no less than a party. I hang out at some pub or in a club almost every night. Doing the same thing on my birthday sounds so turn off.  For a change, I do not want any gifts on my birthday. For a change I want to spend my birthday peacefully with some quality time rather than being knocked out and not to remember afterwards whatsoever.

We’ve been geared to expect big things on our birthdays, just the way we expect New Year’s Eve to be fabulous and Valentine’s Day to be the most romantic day ever. But what’s fabulous? Milling around a party with strangers or watching a movie with loved ones? What’s romantic? A meticulously planned weekend at a bed-and-breakfast or spontaneously happening upon a nice restaurant with a lovely view?

"Releasing expectations, whether high or low, is releasing our dependence on external gratification. We can decide what to be happy or sad about, rather than let others decide for us."

To some people, being alone equals being lonely. To me, I love myself the most (of course as much as I love Shahrukh Khan), I love spending time alone and I do not get bored at all. So, on my day, when I turn yet another year older, I’ll splurge on that cake I’ve been eying for week and I'll be satisfied because everything has been what I’ve decided to do.
